Modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) is the most effective treatment for rapid relief of depressive symptoms. However, the use of MECT is impeded by adverse effects, especially the cognitive function impairments. Combining animal and clinical studies of MECT, this paper discusses the neurogenic mechanism of MECT efficacy and cognitive side effects.
